It was my second year of playing town basketball, when I earned the Sportsmanship award. I remember the day very well. At the end of the season, all the teams gather around and announce the winners of the championship and the player who demonstrates great team sportsmanship. It was just about to be announced, when I had my fingers crossed behind my back. But in my head, it wasn't something I desperately wanted. They called my name, Marissa. I just sat there and they continued to say my name as I zoned out. My teammates were pushing me and telling me to go up and get my trophy, when it all started to sink in.
I realized that it wouldn't have mattered if I had gotten a trophy or not because I was proud of myself for accomplishing an important lesson- to treat people with respect. And I did, which was a reward in itself. I continue to play basketball and support my teammates.
Awwwww! What a lovely story--and an important lesson.... :-)
ReplyDeleteHey Marissa! I just read a similar blog entry of Madison's! I am so happy that you overcame the obstacles you faced while playing sports. The amazing thing about your story is your perseverance paid off! Getting that sportsmanship trophy must have been the most amazing experience! I'm so happy for you!
